The purpose of the conference was to give publicity to the results of an enquiry which had been made into the possibility of speeding-up the application to industry of the results of scientific research. The enquiry was undertaken by Professor C.F. Carter of the Department of Economics, The Queen's University, Belfast, and Professor B.R. Williams of the Department of Economics, University College of North Staffordshire, with the aid of American counterpart funds and under the joint auspices of the Society, the British Association and the Nuffield Foundation.\nThe two day conference was opened by Sir David Eccles, President of the Board of Trade. The first part was to be held under the Society's auspices at the Society's House on 27 June 1957 and the second under the Association's auspices at Leeds University early in July. The theme of the Society's part of the conference was the problem of finance while the second part would concentrate on the training and recruitment of scientists for industry. \n\nThe file mainly contains correspondence detailing how the RSA, the Nuffield Foundation and the British Association became involved with the Science and Industry Committee and their subsequent involvement in the production of the report generated from the enquiry. Included is a set of Minutes concerning proposed methods and angles of research. A programme, summary and draft speeches and remarks relating to the Capital for Scientific Development Conference are also in the file.
