      Note

Following the Preservation of Ancient Cottages Campaign of the 1920, the Society was bequeathed sums of money to meet the costs of preserving ancient buildings. By the 1950s, the remaining sums were donated to the National Trust which chose to spend the money on the upkeep of cottages in Chiddingstone, Kent.\nArlington Row, Bibury, Gloucestershire was bequeathed to the Society and subsequently sold. Files relate to the upkeep of the cottages after their sale.\nButtonsnap Cottage, near Buntingford, Hertfordshire, once the home of poet Charles Lamb, was bequeathed to the Society. It was sold to the Charles Lamb Society in 1949\n
