Opened on 1st May 1951 by HRH The Princess Elizabeth, President of the Society. Organized to commemorate the pioneer exhibitions for which the Society had been responsible and those that followed. The display was associated and concurrent with the Festival of Britain. The theme of the Exhibition centred upon five pioneer exhibitions held by the Society, the first exhibition of contemporary art (1760); first exhibitions of industrial design (1847-50); photography (1852); first industrial exhibition (1761) and the first international exhibition (1851)
