To commemorate Benjamin Franklin's close association with the Society, the Council in 1959 instituted a special grade of Membership for distinguished United States citizens, to be known as Benjamin Franklin Fellowship. Invitations to become such a Fellow are issued by the Council, which does not entertain applications from individuals on their own behalf
