RSA CHAPTER IN VICTORIA<P>\nThe idea to form a Chapter in Victoria was born at a small gathering of Fellows on 30th April 1971 at the Royal Commonwealth Society, Melbourne. 28 Fellows were present, the Chairman was the RSA Honorary Corresponding Member for Victoria, Sir Laurence Hartnett CBE. <P>A committee was formed comprising Sir Laurence Hartnett, Richard Hawkins (Honorary Secretary and Chairman), Peter Bayly, Graham Cooper, Brian Cox , Barry Oliver, Stewart Wackett and Gilbert Vasey. <P>A programme of Fellows evenings devised. H C Sleigh Ltd made their lecture theatre available and the programme was launched at a dinner given in the Great Hall of the new National Gallery of Victoria on 12th September 1972. The Patron of the RSA was represented by His Excellency the Governor, Major General Sir Rohan Delacombe. 73 Fellows and guests were present to hear two main speakers: Mr G Perkin, Editor of the Age, and Mr Talbot Duckmanton, CBE, General Manager of the ABC speak on 'Mass Media and its effect on our Social and Business Lives' During the dinner the Chairman read a cable from the Society's President, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, in which he sent congratulations on our establishing the 'first' region outside the U.K.
