The Committee for the Environment was formed in 1971 (first meeting did not take place until 20 January 1972)at the instigation of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, who also became Chairman of the Committee. It sought to identify and, where possible, to participate in major environmental problems and to provide a forum where these could be discussed.\n\nThe Committee meets three times a year. It held two conferences and two or three seminars a year. From 1971 to 1980 the Committee's programme was based almost entirely on conferences on such diverse topics as utility services underground, forestry policy, the future of Covent Garden and environmental education. From 1980 to 1990 the committee maintained its forum role but also began award schemes. The forum role was strengthened by the addition of seminars and by the greater concentration on certain areas for a period, most notably Industry: Caring for the Environment (leading to a report in 1987) and the Future of the Countryside (report published in 1990). Awards began in 1983 with the Pollution Abatement Technology Award Scheme (PATAS) which ran until 1986; these awards led to the Better Environment for Industry (BEAFI) starting in 1987 and extended the recognition of good environmental management beyond simply pollution abatement. There was also the RSA-Cubitt Trust Panel devoted to the built environment. (Up to 1991 only)\n\nThe Environmental Management Awards were designed to give recognition to the contribution of British management in the development of business practices leading towards a sustainable environment. Awards were given for a significant initiative by British management in the pursuit of sustainability, which seeks to eliminate the negative impacts of business on the environment while maintaining the long-term viability of the business.\n
