The RSA in conjunction with The Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation and The English-Speaking Union hosted a symposium at the RSA on Thursday 23 September 1999.\n\nThe symposium addressed the relevance of ideas of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as the twenty-first century began, in particular the global issues of religious liberty, civil society and the nature and enforcement of human rights. The morning programme focused on Anglo-American history and the afternoon session on contemporary aspects of the three global issues, drawing upon the historical backdrop to provide context.
