In 1924 Thomas L Gray bequeathed a legacy of £9000 for prizes for new inventions in the advancement of the science of navigation grants to finance research connected with navigation institution of lectures on the science of navigation prizes and grants for educational facilities for students or teachers prizes for essays on, or awards for the saving of life at sea. The Society administered the Trust until 1993 when it was transferred to the Marine Society
