      The Festival of Britain was born of the proposals of the Ramsden Committee, of Sir Gerald Barry and of the RSA, that the centenary of the Great Exhibition should be suitably commemorated. The Council of the Festival held its first meeting at the Society's House and Princess Elizabeth attended it as President of the Society.\n14 February 1940:At a meeting of the Faculty of Royal Designers for Industry it was decided to put forward Reco Capey's suggestion, that an international exhibition to celebrate the centenary of the 1851 Great Exhibition, to the RSA Council with the recommendation that the Society should take the lead.\n1943:The Society suggested to the Government that an exhibition should take place in 1951 to commemorate the centenary of 1851.\nMarch 1946:Ramsden Committee Report published\n25 November 1946:Viscount Bennett, President of the Society, writes to the Prime Minister, Clement Atlee, expressing the Society's concern at the delay in responding to the Rasmden Committee Report on the proposed exhibition to be held in 1951\n6 February 1947:The Society convenes a conference attended by over 100 national organisations to consider the proposals for an exhibition to be held in 1951.\nFebruary 1948: The Society makes rooms available in its House for the use of : the Co-ordinating Committee for the Festival of Britain, 1951\n31 May 1948: Princess Elizabeth, as President of the Society, opens the first meeting of the Council of the Festival of Britain, 1951 held in the Society's Great Room.\n
