It was at this event that Sir Peter Ustinov finally received the 1958 Benjamin Franklin Medal 'for his work in the field of drama' as in 1958 it was not possible to present the award. In accepting the award, Sir Peter said he was especially pleased because for years he was afraid he had been given the medal but had lost it.

Awarded to Dr Keith Simpson, Reader in Forensic Medicine to the University of London at Guy's Hospital Medical School, for his work 'Forensic Medicine' (third edition). Designed by David Mellor, the cup is raised in heavy gauge silver and treated with a hammered thickened edge. The body is almost round at the base, transforming into a square with full sides and radiused corners. The top edge of the cup is mounted with a triangular section gold wire and on the front face is mounted the emblem of the RSA carved in 18ct. yellow gold.
Awarded to P S Atiyah, Professor of English Law in the University of Oxford, for his work 'Promises, Morals and Law'. Designed and made by Thomas Dobbie, it is made of silver, with gilt and enamel stem, the enamel sections being individually fitted to a central core attached to the bowl.
