The Society held a conference on apprenticeship on 9 July 1958 and as a result of that conference became aware of the difficulties of small engineering firms in finding facilities for training apprentices and of the efforts which the Engineering Industries Association was making to solve this problem by its Group Apprentice Training Scheme. The society considered launching an appeal for funds in order to extend this Scheme on a national basis.

The Science and Industry Committee originally arose out of a recommendation made by the Economics Section of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at the annual meeting in Belfast 1952. The committee was reconstituted in April 1954 under the joint sponsorship of the RSA, the British Association for the Advancement of Science and the Nuffield Foundation. The Committee's work was financed by grants from the Board of Trade and from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, under the Conditional Aid scheme for the use of counterpart funds derived from United States economic aid.

The functions of the group were to keep the RSA in touch with developments in manufactures and commerce; provide ideas for lectures, projects and initiatives; advise on the value of suggestions for lectures, projects and initiatives coming from the Fellowship and the extent to which the RSA name should be attached to them; evaluate the quality of the RSA manufactures and commerce programme; support the RSA in the formulation and dissemination of ideas and project results and provide advice on sponsorship for manufacturing activities.

This proposal was developed form earlier discussions initiated by the Education Committee and the Women's Working Group.

The Ilkley Conferences are annual gatherings of R&D directors, and other senior executives with responsibility for science, research and technology, for major international and UK firms. The aim of the events were to provide networking opportunities and for exchanging information and ideas.

The William Shipley Appeal was established to raise funds for the Society, in particular for the refurbishment of the Great Room, for the Society's programme, for regional development and for the Archive Project. This series includes photographs taken at the launch event in May 1996 which was attended by Prince Philip as president

The Journal was established in 1852 to disseminate information about the Society's activities and included transcriptions of lectures. Unlike the annual printed Transactions which preceded it, the Journal was initially published weekly.\nRecords include files and papers on the production of the Journal and other related promotional publications and press and publicity generally. Complete runs of the Journal are available for consultation in the Research Room at the RSA. Each volume is indexed and there are cumulative 10 year indexes for the Journal up to 1952.

This series includes information and images on works of art and other artefacts donated to the Society or purchased. An inventory of items is kept for insurance purposes\nThis series contains photographs and illustrations of objects and artefacts which have been donated to the Society or purchased by the Society as part of its collection.
