Prizes were awarded for 'encouragement of knowledge about the British Empire and Anglo-American relations.\nThe 1951 Essay Competition was set up to commemorate the centenary of the Great Exhibition and the 1954 Bicentenary Essay Competition marked the bicentenary of the Society. Competitors were asked to write about life in 'AD2000'
