The functions of the group were to keep the RSA in touch with developments in manufactures and commerce; provide ideas for lectures, projects and initiatives; advise on the value of suggestions for lectures, projects and initiatives coming from the Fellowship and the extent to which the RSA name should be attached to them; evaluate the quality of the RSA manufactures and commerce programme; support the RSA in the formulation and dissemination of ideas and project results and provide advice on sponsorship for manufacturing activities.

Richard Wentworth worked with Charlie Mackeith of Ian Simpson Architects on the development of this museum. A dialogue was created between the museum, architects and other specialist professionals to influence approaches to the detailed design work. The project suffered a variety of difficulties and was completed in 2003. Client: The Manchester Museum. Award value £5,000.
Grenville Davey collaborated with Simpson Associated Architects on the concept, planning and design framework for the redevelopment of Manchester city centre, following a bomb blast in 1996. Davey worked to improve the quality of the spaces and buildings and identify appropriate opportunities for the inclusion of art therein. The project design stage was completed in 1998. Client: Manchester Millennium Ltd. Award value £10,000.
The Management Group was responsible for the day to day management of the Society. It met fortnightly, and was chaired by the Director of the RSA
