Michael Brennand-Wood was appointed to the design team working on the new Braintree Tabor County High School and Braintree Leisure Centre, Essex. The architect for the project was Ian Fraser from Essex County Council. Brennan-Wood designed decorative flooring and textiles for a foyer and identified a number of other areas within the buildings where the work of artists and craftspeople might be incorporated. Tess Jaray played a major part in the re-design of all the pedestrian areas in the city centre surrounding Wakefield Cathedral. Working with Wakefield Metropolitan District Council's Transportation and Engineering Department at design concept stage, Jaray produced a new floorscape, seating, lighting columns, bins and planters. The result is a zone in which superb design and the highest quality materials have been combined to create excellent new public spaces for residents and visitors to the city. Jyl Friggens and Graham Robertson worked with architect Max Brewer to incorporate architectural features including ceramic ridge tiles and a decorative balustrade for the Fish Quay design centre. A row of dilapidated buildings was refurbished to create the centre which is now a venue for local artists and craftspeople. Art and architecture have combined to reawaken a sense of place, inspiring interest and creating opportunities for the community, the arts and other business development. Client: Fish Quay Design Centre. Award value £2,320.
Janet Lubinska worked with architects The Design Practice and the design group of the Queen's Theatre on the conversion of the 18th Century Queen Street Chapel to a 450 seat theatre and arts centre for Huddersfield. The collaboration resulted in a large scale artwork for the new Lawrence Batley Theatre, in addition to designs for features and details in the foyer and circulatory areas of the building. Client: The Lawrence Batley Theatre. Award value £5,000.
Di England and Alan Rossiter from Free Form Arts Trust worked with architect Max Brewer on the construction of a hydrotherapy play pool as an extension of the Equal Play Adventure Park in Hackney, London. England and Rossiter produced designs for wall decorations, pool mosaics and colour treatments to all interior surfaces to facilitate use of the pool space by children and young people with disability. Young people, staff and family users of the centre were involved in the creation of the mosaics for the pool. Client: Equal Play Adventure Park. Award value £3,000.
Chinks Grylls designed signage and a range of artwork projects in this new school building in Taunton, Somerset. Client: Bishop's Fox Community School. Award value £2,000.
Marcela Livingston and Andy Plant worked with Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council's Department of Planning and Development to identify opportunities for the introduction of art into the town centre improvement scheme. Livingston and Plant worked on designs for a Pavilion, the Kirkby Clock and public seating, consulting with the residents of Kirkby. The project was completed in 1994. Client: Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council. Award value £5,000.
Richard Harris worked in collaboration with Percy Thomas Partnership on the design of three internal courtyards in this new NHS Trust hospital in Dorchester. Harris worked with 4D Landscape Design to integrate his proposal with the overall construction and design of the superstructure, creating a real sense of space and place in these key circulation areas. Completed in 1996. Client: West Dorset General Hospital NHS Trust. Award value £10,000.
Rose Garrard worked with architects Levitt Bernstein on the design of new community buildings for Holly Street Estate in Dalston, London. The project included a nursery and day centre for older people. Garrard involved users of the building in the design process and helped to improve the environment and systems of support and communication during the development work. The project was completed in 1995. Client: Holly Street Public Arts. Award value £9,500.
Peter Randall-Page and Mark Dunhill worked with architects Feilden Clegg on the concept, shape and form for a new building at Tout Quarry, Portland. The building to house permanent workshops for the Portland Scupture Trust and a centre for Portland stone. The artists' designs were informed by the physical properties of the quarry and helped to influence the architectural process during the feasibility study. The project was completed in 1998. Client: Portland Sculpture Trust. Award value £2,800.
Amber Hiscott worked with Noel Architects on the conversion of the Old Library in Cardiff into a major centre for the visual arts. The £6.2m scheme includes a number of facilities including two galleries for twentieth century art and a children's discovery centre. Artist and architect worked together to identify opportunities for the involvement of other artists and craftspeople during the later stages of the project. The project was completed in 1997. Client: Cardiff Old Library Trust. Award value £6,500.
Chris Tipping worked with engineer Andy Kerr of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council's Transport Engineering Department on this £200m rail freight terminal in Yorkshire. Tipping produced designs for hard landscape areas, colour zoning for the site, decorative treatments for bridgeworks and adjacent landscape areas, and street furniture. Other opportunities for artists will be offered via an 'arts masterplan' produced by Public Arts commissioning agency. The project was completed in 1995. Client: Wakefield Metropolitan District Council. Award value £3,000.
Yinka Shonibare worked with MODE 1 Architects on this hospital refurbishment scheme to build and enhance a respite care centre for people with mental health difficulties. Shonibare proposed artworks integral to the design and use of the building. The artist was paid for his design input but the project plans were shelved due to financial constraints. Client: West Lambeth Community Care (NHS) Trust. Award value £5,000.
