Painted by Anna Zinkeisen, T R Crampton is third from left, wearing an Inverness cape. Awarded the Society's gold medal in 1846 for his invention of the narrow-gauge locomotive engine. Working from engravings and records preserved at the Science Museum and in the archives, the artist has reproduced not only the design but also the original colouring of the engine. 34,000 copies sold.

Awarded to Dr Keith Simpson, Reader in Forensic Medicine to the University of London at Guy's Hospital Medical School, for his work 'Forensic Medicine' (third edition). Designed by David Mellor, the cup is raised in heavy gauge silver and treated with a hammered thickened edge. The body is almost round at the base, transforming into a square with full sides and radiused corners. The top edge of the cup is mounted with a triangular section gold wire and on the front face is mounted the emblem of the RSA carved in 18ct. yellow gold.

Awarded to P S Atiyah, Professor of English Law in the University of Oxford, for his work 'Promises, Morals and Law'. Designed and made by Thomas Dobbie, it is made of silver, with gilt and enamel stem, the enamel sections being individually fitted to a central core attached to the bowl.

Award instituted as a result of a recommendation by the Commonwealth Section Committee, consists of a silver medal and diploma. The object of the award was to encourage the making of documentary films designed for specific public purposes in their country of origin. The award was open film production units operating in any country of the Commonwealth for the purpose of making documentary films. Films had to be submitted through the Government of the country and no country could enter more than two films.\nIn devising the award the RSA was greatly assisted by advice and help from the Colonial Office, the Commonwealth Relations Office, the Central Office of Information and the British Film Institute.
