The first phase of the House Appeal was completed in Summer 2001, and consisted of urgent structural repairs to the Library and Research Room ceilings. The work involved pinning back laths and bridging timbers, which had begun to separate from the ceiling joists.
The competition of the first phases prevented any further deterioration of the original Adam plasterwork.

A scheme based on their preservation was launched. This became a scheme called Adopt a Lion. The donation would be put towards the cost of carefully clearing the plasterwork, and reinstating the original paint scheme.
"For donations of £1,000 ($1,500) and above you can name your lion for the duration of 3 years, and your acquisition will be recorded in a book to be kept in the house"

The RSA House Appeal aimed to raise over £500,000 to repair, restore and redecorate the Adam ceilings and decorative schemes of two within the House, and subsequently relocate the Society's library resources to the purpose built space within 8 John Adam Street.

The RSA aimed to raise over £500,000 to repair, restore and redecorate the Adam ceilings and decorative schemes of two room within the House.
The RSA offered Fellows to option of "adopting" one of the 40 miniature lions which adore the Adam frieze in the Research room. For donations of £1000 and above you can name your lion for the duration of three years. The donations were put toward the cost of carefully cleaning the plasterwork, and reinstating the original paint scheme.
